WONKA MOVIE REVIEW

Wonka Review

This would be the third Willie wonka I will have seen so far in my life and gotta say the story doesn’t get old. We had legends play the role like Gene wilder and Johnny Depp. And now we have Timothée Chalamet. No one will ever play the bright comic exterior and dark soul of Willy Wonka like Gene Wilder. So can Wonka live up to the lofty expectations we have for this franchise. We will see right here on meosmoviereview.

Younger, sweeter and significantly less weird than his prior screen incarnations, the latest Willy Wonka — played by Timothée Chalamet — sets off on his adventure with a dream and a smile. For the next two hours, he keeps smiling, while sometimes singing.

Movie franchises live forever, it seems, hence “Wonka,” a new musical origin story set in an earnest key about the first business ventures of the young Willy.

This movie is stuffed with talented performers who seem to be having a pleasant time, even when pretending to be bad.

Wonka” turns back the clock to when Willy was a striver with near-empty pockets and a suitcase filled with enchantments. After years of sailing the world Trouble comes for Wonka from the candy cartel, run by a trio of chocolatiers — Slugworth, Prodnose and Fickelgruber — who don’t want competition, especially from a rival who wants to sell his treats at affordable prices.

The good news is that Chalamet, is a pleasant surprise, finding the sweet nature of the young magician and chocolate maker. Chalamet’s Wonka is relatively carefree, except for his sorrow over his late mum, played in flashbacks by the reliably sublime Sally Hawkins.

There isn’t much of a movie, though everything possible is thrown on the screen — chases, breakouts, candy varieties, more songs and more characters who fail to make an impression. The exception is Hugh Grant, singlehandedly worth the price of admission as an orange-skinned, green-haired Oompa Loompa with his own designs on Wonka’s chocolate.

Wonka" is at its best when it floats above the heavy plot machinery and settles in as wispy, whimsical fun.

So is Wonka as good as the 1971 film adaptation? No, but the story and the fun is still there for another generation to enjoy. Good stories never die just remembered and reinterpreted. So check out this version of Willy Wonka I’m sure you will enjoy it. #ourconic #meosmoviereview #wonka #moviereview
